Polka Dot Rocket .com
So, any advice anyone could offer me on these? I'm trying to come up with a logo for my website and this is an hour or two's work. Which one do people prefer colour wise? If you saw this on a website - what would you think? Really, anything that comes to mind. good or bad.

I have to say, the old creative juices aren't running very creatively. It's been a while! More academic study has taken over a little bit, time to give the old right side of the brain' a flex me thinks.
I also get the nagging feeling that Illustrator is the tool for the job - not Photoshop. Do i want to try and learn a new piece of software on top of my already logic-defying workload though, that is the question.

This is the original, but as you can see the rocket is a little hard to see....

On another note, check out the business-boy look me (taken for my resume). When i get back to England next, i wonder how many people will recognise me? Ha.

I love the last one for sure! It's more striking. If I saw this on a website..hmm..with a rocket..I'd expect to see something a little quirky and fun.

Oh my God your picture! You're all..business like! I wouldn't imagine the guy I first met on LJ years ago would look like this a few years on ;D

Apologies for the very brief reply, but Illustrator is the way to go. Imho make a logo that looks good in black and white with no gradients, it will be stark, punchy, easy to comprehend and also work for both web and print. Plus, the rocket part should be able to stand up on it's own, can't speak for Japan/ cultural variations, but the pink background makes it very hard to glance at. Forbidden Planet have an excellent rocket logo from Rian Hughes/ Device btw. Actually all his logo work is good. When does it need to be done by, I could have a play later in the week if you want?

I was sure you'd say that about Illustrator, which is where my 'nagging feeling' probably came from! Advice taken on board!

There's no real deadline, so please please feel free. I'm still learning how to do the web-building itself, so it's all going to be work in progress for a while.

Move the rocket fire slightly as the flames are over the last 's' in Services and it's not immediately clear.

You probably don't need the full-stop on th end of "English Services" as it's not a sentence, it's a strapline.

Use the last logo, but change the text underneath to black - the white really only works for highlighting detail such as the windows and star background.

Something like erm, mspaint...

Looking at it, i'd also fill the windows in as white circles - it might just be the way you've mocked it up, but it looks like there's grey bits and detail there. Logos should really be simple, and the detail currently behind the windows looks busy.

Consider it when printed on a business card or letterhead; small detail like what's in the windows at the moment won't come out well when printed.

Liiiiike...

Move the rocket away from the text a bit for some visual separation and that's about the sum of the tweaks i'd do. Also consider how your logo would look when printed/copied in greyscale. You might want to have a simple black/white version sorted out for this.

And yes, illustrator, damnit :P

Your right about how much better that looks moved over. I hadn't even noticed! actually the rocket's a piece of polka dot wrapping paper than i scanned and cut out in photoshop - hence the detail. I was trying to go for something that popped out, but maybe your right - i should just get off my arse and learn how to use Illustrator!

...Not that theres anything wrong with mspaint mind you >=D

I've added it on to my list of things to learn. Along with business, marketing, more dreamweaver, and MySQL (although im still not totally sure i know what that is yet. Only that i probably need it to embedded a blog into my website). With any luck i should have everything up and running by the summer. Maybe!

Yup! Actually, i still had a message in the pipeline replying to one you left me ages ago, but i was waiting till we knew if we were coming or not! We're probably going to try and get down with Yuuli in the summer for a week or two. He's still to small to do much, but yanno, pub lunches and country walks are pretty inviting when you live in a city like Tokyo !
